My 2nd Big Day #7 – We went to Club Chinois for Food Tasting

Submitted by Gigi on May 6, 2009 – 9:10 pmNo Comment

It’s 5 months more to the customary day and the least I should do (even though it is a simple affair) is to get a venue for the small cozy lunch. I’ve been procrastinating about this after meeting some obstacles with Peony Jade and Grand Shanghai. Finally!

Club Chinois Food Tasting

I’ve heard good reviews about this place. Being housed under the Tung Lok brand, people usually will have high expectations of the food. What surprised me was actually not the food, but the nice ambience (of soft lighting and Shanghainese music) when I walked in and its impeccable service level.

My troop of 3 (consisting of Chuck, my mother and myself) reached the restaurant located at Orchard Parade Hotel at about 7pm. Mum is the picky sort (although she won’t ever admit it but she is) so it is better if she’s there to give some comments. Not many guests around though. The Restaurant Ambassador (aka banquet-in-charge) Ashley was also friendly and tried to attend to our enquiries as best as she can.

The restaurant can hold a maximum of 17 tables but a small area will be sanctioned off if we are to get 8 tables. The 3 dishes were specially ordered for our “Food Tasting” session and have to be made in advance because these are not offered in their dinner menu.

The first dish. I think its important to leave a good impression for my guests. Roast Suckling Pig and Club Chinois Special (Suckling Pig, Roast Duck, Tempura Prawn, Vietnamese Spring Roll & Marinated Jelly Fish). (大红乳猪拼盘)

This portion is for 6 (oh well there are only 3 of us). Mum is not satisfied with the tempura prawn, she says it’s too much flour. The rest is good, the Roast Duck and Spring roll are excellent.

Crispy Skin Fried Chicken Served with Mango Compote (新华脆皮烧鸡)
Club Chinois Food Tasting
Okay, this fusion style tasted too weird to be offered to the old folks. So we’re scraping this and changing it to the same chicken with Nam Yu (南乳吊燒雞).

Lotus Rice with Eight Treasures (八宝荷叶饭)
Club Chinois Food Tasting
Fragrant Lotus Rice with plentiful ingredients. This is very good.

We shall be putting down the deposit of $400 soon if there are no violent objections.
